‘Star Wars’ becomes top grossing domestic film ever

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Move over, “Avatar,” there’s a new force in town. In only 20 days in theaters, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has unseated a James Cameron pic as a No. 1 North American film of all time.

According to Disney, J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars” warranted adequate on Wednesday to pass “Avatar’s” $760.5 million lifetime gross. As of Tuesday, a film was only bashful of a record during $758.2 million.

The worldwide record still belongs to “Avatar,” though, and that competence continue. “The Force Awakens” has warranted $1.6 billion to date, as compared to “Avatar’s” $2.8 billion.

“Star Wars” will open in China on Jan. 9, that will give a film a poignant boost, though some analysts are presaging that a film competence now net out in a mid-$2 billion range.
