My name is Brian Podnos, and my mother Donna and we run an architectural photography association called Donna Dotan Photography. We were recently consecrated to emanate a hulk 60-foot imitation of Citifield with New York City in a credentials during twilight. Here’s a demeanour during how we done a photo.

Our tour to formulating a 60 feet imitation started with a fulfilment that we were going to need a some-more absolute camera complement than a one we routinely used on imitation shoots.

At a time, we were regulating a Canon 5D Mark III to do photography of a indication units for a new growth devise in Flushing, Queens. One of a photos they wanted to see was a perspective of Manhattan from a construction site, so we waited until twilight and got a flattering implausible imitation showcasing Citifield with a city in a background.

We didn’t know during a time they were going to be floating this picture adult to that kind of distance (60 feet x 9 feet), and once we were told, we motionless to representation them a thought of vouchsafing us go behind with a middle format system. They concluded with a premonition that a final picture indispensable to be delivered during a finish of a week.

The Phase One IQ3 100MP system had just come out, and we unequivocally wanted to implement a latest and biggest sensor (100MP!). After some adversity (you’ll see in a video) we were means to lease a camera. Now we usually had one day to get a shot.

The vigour was on. Everything had to go according to plan. The continue had to cooperate, and we had to learn a mechanics behind a camera we had never used before, and we had to figure out accurately by what routine we would emanate a photo.

Since a wall was 60 feet wide, we knew we would have to fire mixed panels and tack them together in post (even with a middle format system, a singular shot wouldn’t be sufficient), though we weren’t certain if we should use a rail or a tripod. We also didn’t know if we should sketch in a plane or straight orientation, or if we should constraint a panels top-down or left-right. Lastly, we weren’t certain that lens would be many appropriate.

Lots of questions, not a lot of time to spare.

After most deliberation, we motionless to take mixed lenses and figure a rest out on site. Thankfully, a continue was on a side that day. We rented a camera from Digital Transitions in NYC and they were extraordinary in training us how to work it. They also positive us they would always be around should something arise on site. That comforted us to contend a least.

Sunset was around 5:15, so we arrived during 4 and done a approach adult a construction site to a 15th floor. It was already so pleasing as a object was environment behind a Manhattan skyline.

Quickly, we were means to discharge a rail complement we had brought. Our imitation theme was so distant divided that we could simply sketch a indispensable panels on a Arca-Swiss D4 tripod head. Next, we motionless that a Schneider 150mm was a lens to use. It gave us accurately a support we were anticipating to get. We inaugurated to asian a camera plumb and fire around 7 panels from left to right.

One additional component we disturbed over was a fear that a construction site would be too active. Any camera shake would meant a picture would be blurry. Thankfully we were means to name a building where no one was working, and so were giveaway to begin. Once a camera was set up, we ran a exam by tethering to a mechanism and holding a demeanour during how a panels built adult subsequent to any other. It was perfect, a fortitude was incredible, we were even means to review signs that were miles away!

We were finally assured that we would be means to emanate a picture a approach we wanted to. Now we only had to wait for a buildings to light up….

The subsequent day we alien all a files to a bureau computers and spent a rest of a day modifying a shot. It literally took all day to get a tone corrections on indicate and mix a imitation seamlessly. We finally submitted a imitation and shortly after listened from a printer that a record was going to work. We all breathed a whine of relief.

We got to see a imitation in chairman a week later, and it was incredible. Inspecting it adult tighten we unequivocally got to see how pointy each fact was. It was intensely gratifying to have finally used a middle format camera, and to have used it for something this ambitious.

Here’s a scenery that was incited into a hulk 60-foot imitation (you can click it to see the strange resolution):

Reflecting on a experience, a whole routine was flattering wild. There were so many doubt outlines in a atmosphere and that done a fire a large risk (renting a complement like this isn’t cheap!), though it all worked out in a finish and if zero else, it creates me consternation how we will ever go behind to a DSLR (just teasing Canon, we still adore ya).

Here’s a 6-minute behind-the-scenes video we done while doing this project:
